Departure in place
James's name for a way of leaving industrial modernity without going anywhere. Foundational to everything the research does (James, 2026-10-26). This page and the pages it links restate his own idea network of 2026-10-26; they record his position, not sourced claims about the world. The full text is in raw/notes/dip-idea-network-2026-10-26.md.
In one paragraph (his words, lightly trimmed). "Departure" means shortening the chains of dependency that hold a life in place (food, housing, healthcare, income, identity) and withdrawing allegiance from the frames that justify them. "In place" means doing this from inside (a salaried job, a rented house, a family) rather than through a dramatic exit. It is addressed to people at the rich Western end of industrial-technological late modernity (tech workers, product people, the professional-managerial class) who are inside the system that is unravelling and have no position of arrival to write from. Its underlying move is to clear captured frames, spiritual and economic alike, without installing a replacement. It is written for the rootless finding home, not for the already rooted.
The idea network
- The condition. substrate-maintenance: industrial flow systems degrade the substrates their currents depend on. An age of crisis, not a crisis (macro-view, civilizational-transition). The PMC is held in place by dependency chains, not attitudes (pmc-dependency-chains).
- The audience. Tech workers, product builders, the PMC; the aim, the great simplification and the June 2026 vocabulary are on pmc-dependency-chains. Written from inside the condition (writing-from-inside). Not prepping (relocalisation-beyond-prepping); communities of dependency, not of discourse (porous-community).
- The operation. Two axes, spatial and social (departure-spatial-social). Neti-neti: clear captured frames, install none (clearing-captured-frames). The transition runs on the declining system's resources (writing-from-inside).
- The metaphysics. Relational panpsychism, dual-aspect monism (relational-ontology); subjects through closure; graded-ethics; beauty-as-perception; animism-as-perception.
- The physics-and-systems bridge. constructal-law; its corollary substrate-maintenance; convergent-signatures; the unified-critique.
- The politics. porous-community; minimum necessary legibility (commons); local perspectives without universalising narratives (Escobar's pluriverse); many last-era technologies will be valuable and convivial (convivial-computation).
- Form and container. An intellectual and practical synthesis project whose form is left open (James's correction, March 2026); a book is one container, and some pieces transmit better through practice. Written under his own name. Planned arc for the written form: lead with relocalisation and dependency-chain logic, arrive at class exit later, so readers recognise the condition before being asked to name it; the convergent-signatures material is load-bearing. An adjacent strand (June 2026): a six-part reorientation series for tech workers (the collapsing narrative; what's coming; being ejected; useful work on the outside; subsistence in the low-energy economy; building the social networks that soften the landing). Argument mode is right for that series. The writing is his (writing-is-his).
- Relations to other projects. convivial-computation is the active focus since Sept 2026, with DiP as its substrate. civilizational-transition feeds it. local-low-dependency-living is DiP applied to the household, and coaching-inquiry a possible practice for leaders "aware of the need to depart". post-purpose-towns is field material.
Lineage
ivan-illich (counterproductivity, radical monopoly, institutional capture); wendell-berry, with the Berry gap (he wrote for the rooted, DiP for the rootless); christopher-alexander (living structure, structure-preserving transformation); Ostrom; Scott; Graeber; gregory-bateson; Kimmerer; Yunkaporta; Plumwood; Gibson; Bejan; Tainter; Jason W. Moore; Nancy Fraser; degrowth political economy (Kallis, Hickel, Saito, Malm, alf-hornborg (not yet read)); Chris Smaje's agrarian localism; Nate Hagens on energy; Escobar; Erik Olin Wright and Gramsci for theory of change. Against: rationalist and post-rationalist atomism, Great Founder Theory, the view from nowhere.
Held tensions
- Rootedness versus rootlessness: "departing in place and homing in flight".
- The role of technology, and governance of powerful non-local tools.
- The politics of possible future societies.
- Have we all given up on climate, topsoil, deforestation, extinction? (He hasn't.)
Where this differs from elsewhere in the wiki (to resolve with James)
- Resolved 2026-10-26: the network's four crises stand. Deglobalisation is one James expects but which is not yet clearly emergent; macro-view now says the same.
- Resolved 2026-10-26: Hornborg is in the lineage but James has not read him yet (alf-hornborg).
- Open, 2026-10-26: the network says AI is "marginal to these drivers, or possibly an accelerant", but evidence on macro-view shows AI capex driving most recent trade growth and part of the copper price. Is AI a driver now, or a boom that masks the drivers?
Corrections (2026-10-26)
- ~~"A sequence of koan-like pieces and aphorisms."~~ It was never that (James). It came from the seed notes and was repeated in the threads document.
- ~~"Darby Hudson is the craft model."~~ Struck pending James; it was tied to the aphorism description.
- Moved from projects/ to concepts/ (2026-10-26): it is an idea network, not a book project.
Provenance: James, "Departure in Place (DiP) — idea network", 2026-10-26 (raw/notes/dip-idea-network-2026-10-26.md). His statement of his own position; not a sourced claim about the world. Disposition: stated.

His published notes against the network
His notes at exitmusic.world (July 2025 to July 2026; full text: raw/notes/exitmusic-world-2026-10-26.md) state several nodes earlier and in his own words, and add pieces the network doesn't yet name. The mapping below is the wiki author's reading, for James to confirm or correct; the notes themselves are his.
1. The condition
- "The technological mindset" (Sept 2025) is the earliest statement of substrate-maintenance: technology replaces living processes we can't comprehend, and care never acquired a global footprint to match the machines. It also anticipates the June 2026 vocabulary on pmc-dependency-chains ("the maker's instinct pointed at replacing living systems with brittle machines").
2. The audience
- "A meditation on tech workers' predicament" (Jan 2026) is the audience section in miniature: awakening plus compassion, "said to myself", a place for everyone in the transition but not for the identities that made them. It is the structural, non-moralising posture of pmc-dependency-chains, applied to himself first.
- ai-risk-as-runaway-it (Dec 2025) gives the argument behind the network's aside that "AI is marginal to these drivers, or possibly an accelerant": the risk is the old one of deploying what we can't forecast for profit, accelerated.
- "Learning to need each other" (Mar 2026) is the ground of communities of dependency (relocalisation-beyond-prepping, porous-community): an economy of mutual care, as communities that couldn't trust disembodied institutions have always had. The same post records the March 2026 doubt about the book that section 7 mentions.
3. The operation
- dark-discourse (Mar 2026) is a worked example of a captured frame (clearing-captured-frames): a discourse that makes its own harms unknowable, in which the designer is "the first victim". That is the network's point that people are held by structure, not attitude, stated for a profession.
- "Use parts of the old system to take us to the new" (Jan 2026) is writing-from-inside.
4. The metaphysics
- "A somewhat ambitious metaphysical exploration" (July 2026) is the fullest statement of relational-ontology and closure: nested orders of consciousness unaware of what contains them, aliveness as the prudent epistemic choice after colonial error. It adds a node the network lacks: regenerative-violence, which refines graded-ethics. What he has said about AI, orders and kin is gathered on ai-orders-and-kin.
- The beauty sketch and "Life is supposed to be pleasurable" (July 2025) are the source of beauty-as-perception in his own words ("a system perceiving the conditions of its own flourishing"); the "apparent beauty" note is the first form of the point that beauty diminishes with awareness of harm, ~~the consequence-field test~~ (revised 2026-10-26, James: not a test of beauty but proof that beauty is relational).
5. The physics-and-systems bridge
- "Life is supposed to be pleasurable" (July 2025) already maps two of the five convergent-signatures onto each other: Alexander's fifteen properties as outcomes of constructal-law evolution. It is the seed of the bridge.
6. The politics
- "It's not techno-optimism" (Jan 2026) names the stance behind "many last-era technologies will be valuable and convivial": techno-ecological rather than techno-capitalist optimism (convivial-computation). The later scale-as-justification-for-rent belongs here too.
Held tensions
- "To imagine the future is partly to normalize it" (Oct 2025) sharpens "have we all given up?": how to prepare for what's coming while refusing to normalise it, and what right action is when hope is lost.
Section 7 and the practice notes. "Design for moral coherence" (Oct 2025) bears on DiP applied to a life (thread-how-people-change). The July 2025 productivity notes (working-patterns, note-keeping) are about how he works, not the network; recorded so they aren't mistaken for gaps.

On departurein.place (his blog)
- "Departure In Place: An outline for a wildly ambitious book" (April 2025): the earliest public form of the idea, twelve chapters and an epilogue; a point-in-time reference, since his thinking has evolved a lot since (James, 2026-10-26). See dip-book-outline-2025, which also lists what it adds to the network (the progress/collapse duopoly, post-collapse reorganisation, design principles for break-away resilience, "not degrowth as a target"). https://departurein.place/departure-in-place-an-outline-for-a-wildly-ambitious-book/
- "Learning to Need Each Other" (March 2026): the condition and audience argued in full. Ideologies dispute who runs the machine, not the machine (the-machine-not-its-management); liberalism's selective blindness (liberalism-selective-blindness); the professional class as the class that can't see, and the knowledge held by the excluded (professional-class-misrecognition); the double bind and the liberal and prepper as failed responses (pmc-double-bind); practice, not planning, and proximity, not purity (practice-not-planning). https://departurein.place/learning-to-need-each-other/
- Lineage named there and not yet on this page: Barbara and John Ehrenreich, musa-al-gharbi, Bourdieu (méconnaissance), James Baldwin, gregory-bateson's double bind.
