Constructal Law

Part of the departure-in-place idea network, section 5.

Adrian Bejan's Constructal Law: flow systems evolve to give easier access to their currents. James values it for its predictive power over emergence in general, not as physics annexing social science, and says it should not be overclaimed as a "theorem". The substrate-maintenance corollary is its contrapositive.

Not yet researched in the wiki. Its scientific standing and how it has been received are open questions a session could look at, on James's terms (predictive power over emergence).

How he uses it (July 2025)

Bejan's statement as he quotes it: "For a finite-size flow system to persist in time (to live), it must evolve in such a way that it provides easier access to the currents that flow through it." He reads christopher-alexander's fifteen properties of living structure (The Nature of Order) as the outcomes of constructal evolution: a building evolves in use towards easier access to its flows, so Alexander and Bejan "were barking up the same tree". This is also what lets him make sense of Alexander's use of the word "life". Beauty then becomes the felt signal of that evolution (beauty-as-perception).
