Christopher Alexander

Architect and theorist of pattern language and living structure (James, in conversation, Aug–Oct 2026; unverified).

What James uses (departure-in-place, 2026-10-26): living structure and structure-preserving transformation; the fifteen properties of living structure as one of the convergent-signatures of configurations that persist, which in turn ground beauty-as-perception. No session has researched Alexander yet. Possible connections, unexplored and Claude's guess only: pattern language as a way communities could specify their own tools (thread-convivial-computation); "living structure" alongside the alive-versus-mechanical reading in thread-under-the-threads.

Disposition: stable (James's use); not yet researched. Part of philosophy-of-technology.

What James takes from the later Alexander (July 2025)

Most software people know the pattern languages, not The Nature of Order (four volumes, fifteen properties of living structure, "aliveness" in designed structures). James couldn't relate to Alexander's use of "life" until he read Bejan; he now reads the fifteen properties as results of constructal-law processes, with beauty as the sign of aliveness.
