Substrate maintenance
Part of the departure-in-place idea network, section 1 and 5.
Industrial modernity is structurally unsustainable: its flow systems degrade the substrates (soil, water, climate, social trust) that their own currents depend on.
The corollary, in the physics-and-systems bridge: a flow system that destroys access to its own currents cannot persist. James treats this as the contrapositive of the constructal-law, so it needs no separate grounding.

The technological mindset (September 2025)
His earlier statement of the condition (https://exitmusic.world/the-technological-mindset): we understand life so poorly that when a technology replaces a living process "we can't even comprehend what it is that the technology replaced". His example: mycorrhizae and trees are accepted as essential to soil fertility in ecology, yet irrelevant to an agriculture that treats soil as a porous medium for converting seeds to crops with fossil-fuelled nitrogen, while practices that kept soil alive for millennia without Haber-Bosch are dismissed (compare the nitrogen findings on uk-food-security-findings). Machines act at ever larger scales and push living systems, which exist in definite local places, to the margins. There are no practices of care with global footprints to match, because the cast of mind that builds such machines devalues care: "as long as we produce enough, efficiently enough, we can outrun the need for care".
