The professional class's double bind

From "Learning to Need Each Other" (March 2026, https://departurein.place/learning-to-need-each-other/), section "The double bind".

gregory-bateson's double bind (contradictory demands at different logical levels, with no way to leave the field) describes the professional class exactly: the system is failing and we can see it, so we must change; our formation and dependencies prevent transformation, so we cannot; and mortgage, children and healthcare hold us in place, so we cannot leave the field either.

The liberal and the prepper are both failed responses. The liberal carries the current way of being through the disruption by defending failing institutions; the prepper by stockpiling, "competitive individualism with the grid down". What decides whether a community survives is relational density: knowing your neighbours, complementary skills, practised cooperation, networks of trust. The prepper with six months of food who doesn't know his neighbours is less resilient than a poor community with nothing stored and deep mutual knowledge. Both share "a horror of needing other people". But needing others materially, with no escape, is what produces mutual aid, and that is very hard to build "while your income can substitute for every relationship within a mile of your house".

Bateson also held that a double bind becomes transformative when named and sat in consciously: not resolved, but permission "to stop trying to think your way out and start acting your way through". See practice-not-planning.

The relational-density claim is a claim about the world that a session can test (disaster sociology on social ties and recovery); see the steer.
