Relocalisation beyond prepping

Part of the departure-in-place idea network, section 2.

Not lifestyle preparedness or individual homesteading. Capacity-building that matters requires structural change in land use, labour allocation and capital deployment: collective organising, positioning for economic disruptions, commons-based alternatives. And cultural work: making relocalisation attractive rather than a deprivation, and reframing subsistence economies as sophisticated and community-oriented rather than primitive.

The relevant communities are communities of dependency, not communities of discourse (the Stoa and rationalist scenes are the contrast): mutual need you can't opt out of, among people who didn't choose each other for intellectual compatibility. See porous-community.

Provenance: James, "Departure in Place (DiP) — idea network", 2026-10-26 (raw/notes/dip-idea-network-2026-10-26.md). His statement of his own position; not a sourced claim about the world. Disposition: stated.

<!-- dip-exitmusic-links --> From his notes: "Learning to need each other" (March 2026, https://exitmusic.world/learning-to-need-each-other) grounds communities of dependency in an economy of mutual care rather than production; see porous-community.

The prepper as a failed response (March 2026)

The prepper and the liberal share "a horror of needing other people"; relational density, not stockpiles, decides whether a community survives. See pmc-double-bind (https://departurein.place/learning-to-need-each-other/).
