6. How people change
The thread is about how people, and groups of people, actually change: what moves them, what holds them in place, and what helping looks like. Restructured 2026-10-26 at James's request: the subject is change, not James; biographical material has been cut back to what grounds a view. Each point below is his own position, with its source.
Change comes from conditions and practice, not targets
- Practice, not planning. "Ways of being emerge from practice, not plans"; the instinct to produce a roadmap with milestones "is itself the trap". The practices are ordinary: relocating competence from the abstract to the embodied, letting yourself be seen to be incompetent, learning from people whose knowledge comes from doing, and needing others for real things. (practice-not-planning, https://departurein.place/learning-to-need-each-other/)
- Create the conditions the next step unfolds from. Momentum is recursive, not iterative: each step creates the conditions, and the motivation, for the next, instead of stringing together items on a list. (https://exitmusic.world/recursive-momentum-rather-than-iterative-momentum)
- Context constrains the self, so design for moral coherence. Designs should bring habits and actions into line with the values people hold, or wish they could hold; "the type of self I am capable of being is incredibly constrained by my context" (Taylor Guthrie, quoted). (https://exitmusic.world/design-can-help-tilt-what-we-do-towards-who-we-want-to-be)
- The bottleneck is activation, not awareness. People rarely lack knowledge of what to do; what helps is working on the transition from intention to action, without scoring or guilt. (Open-threads document; built into cos.)
- Ask what conditions support what is going well. A heuristic for any system, a process, a relationship or a life: "Do I perceive beauty and ease unfolding? If yes, what conditions are supporting the unfolding of that beauty? If no, what would be beautiful that could evolve from here?" (beauty-as-perception, https://exitmusic.world/life-is-supposed-to-be-pleasurable)
Against goal-driven and behaviourist change
- Mainstream coaching smuggles in behaviourism: people as stimulus-response machines nudged toward targets. Techniques optimised for dramatic shifts (NLP, Ericksonian change work) teach valuable skills of attention and language but aim at the wrong thing; real change comes from showing up over time. (Open-threads document; regenerative-practice.)
- People and organisations are living systems with their own potential to develop, not problems to fix (Carol Sanford). Hold a person's possible greatness as a horizon and let goals serve it; coaching and mentoring are less separate than the standard definitions say. (regenerative-practice, coaching-inquiry)
What holds people in place
- Structure, not attitude. People in the professional class are held by interlocking dependency chains (income, housing, healthcare, identity), not by their views; so the posture must be structural and non-judgmental, never moralising. (pmc-dependency-chains)
- The double bind. They can see the system failing and must change; their formation and dependencies stop them changing; mortgage, children and healthcare stop them leaving the field. (pmc-double-bind)
- Misrecognition. A class that produces the story about the system can't see its own role in it, and can't receive knowledge from below on equal terms without inverting the prestige hierarchy its identity rests on. (professional-class-misrecognition)
- Income substitutes for relationship. Mutual aid grows from material need you can't opt out of, which is very hard to build "while your income can substitute for every relationship within a mile of your house". (pmc-double-bind)
How it gets unstuck
- Name the bind and sit in it. From Bateson: a double bind becomes transformative, not pathological, when named and held consciously; not because naming resolves it, but because it gives "permission to stop trying to think your way out and start acting your way through". (pmc-double-bind)
- Awakening and compassion together. People inside the system deserve both awakening to their part in it and compassion for not yet knowing it or how to get out. (pmc-dependency-chains, https://exitmusic.world/a-meditation-on-tech-workers-predicament-and-their-role-in-the-coming)
- Loss of identity as agency. There is a place for everyone in the transition, but not necessarily for the skills, status and expectations that made them who they thought they were; that loss can bring agency "through our relation and our mutual dependence". (Same source.)
- Care gives the motivation; need makes it real. Only care for the people and places nearest to us gives the motivation to change at our own cost, and only genuine dependence, not performed solidarity, shows what comes next. "The goal is not purity but proximity." (practice-not-planning)
- Orientation, not instruction. The aim for people inside the industry is to help them orient so they can receive what's coming, act with agency, and see that the learnt "master-of-the-universe" perspective is neither true nor helpful. (pmc-dependency-chains, DiP network)
The common pattern (the wiki author's reading, for James to correct)
Across coaching, the professional class and personal practice, the same view recurs: people change through their conditions, relationships and practice, not through targets, persuasion or moral pressure. What helps is changing what someone depends on and is near to, naming what binds them, and holding a horizon rather than a goal.
