Practice, not planning: proximity, not purity

From "Learning to Need Each Other" (March 2026, https://departurein.place/learning-to-need-each-other/), section "Practice, not planning".

The way out is not a plan: the instinct to produce a transition roadmap "is itself the trap", because the transformation is in ways of being, and those emerge from practice. The practices are ordinary:

Each shifts material conditions and closes the distance to the communities that already hold the knowledge (professional-class-misrecognition), meeting them as neighbours rather than as subjects of study. "None of this looks dramatic. You're still going to work ... still inside the machine. But the centre of gravity shifts." Skills move from CV to hands, relationships from professional network to neighbourhood.

"The goal is not purity but proximity": close enough that when conditions change, "by our choice or the system's", the relational infrastructure is there and the crossing distance is short. Only care for the people and places nearest us gives the motivation to change at our own cost, and only genuine dependence, not performed solidarity or charity, shows what comes after the machine.

This is the operation of departure-in-place stated as practice: both axes of departure-spatial-social at household scale.
