Dark discourse

His term, from "Dark Discourse" (March 2026, https://exitmusic.world/dark-discourse).

Prompted by IDEO's furry robot pet at SXSW, designed to trigger mammalian caregiving: the design question was what shape makes people trust and love the robot, never what it does, who controls it, what data it collects, what energy it burns or whose interests it serves. The operation is domestication, of the object and of the viewer's perception. "Beware objects that seek to become your pet, lest you become their pet."

It isn't a dark pattern in the usual sense, where the designer knowingly performs the trick: here the designer is the first victim. A dark discourse is one where what's rendered unknowable is specifically the harm the discourse itself generates. Human-centred design has a grammar that can express affect, delight, trust, accessibility and inclusion, but not indirect, downstream, non-user, epistemic or ontological harms. The discourse trains, credentials and rewards good-faith practitioners, so "you can swap out every designer and the dark discourse persists". He draws on zachary-kaiser's Interfaces and Us: the interface pre-specifies what a person is, so power asymmetry, surveillance and coercion are ontologically excluded, not just hidden.

The tension: simplifying an object's expression and hiding its workings makes tools usable, and also disconnects users from the harms to themselves, society and the biosphere. Human-centred design's answer to cui bono is in practice the user; more accurately, qui pendit, solus penditur: only the one who pays is counted.

Connections: the "apparent beauty" note on beauty-as-perception (beauty that survives only by not seeing the harm); philosophy-of-technology (Illich on tools that make people serve them); thread-judgement-in-machines.

Provenance: James's published notes at exitmusic.world, read in full 2026-10-26 (raw/notes/exitmusic-world-2026-10-26.md). His statement of his own position; not a sourced claim about the world. Disposition: stated.

Connection (author's reading)

The same structure at class scale is professional-class-misrecognition: a class that produces the story about the machine and leaves itself out of it.
