5. Mind and the machine

Two positions:

• Critical of attributing thought, feeling or intention to AI; one of two editorial lenses of his weekly ai-roundup. Mind-talk about models is inaccurate and convenient for sellers.
• His metaphysics is relational panpsychism (relational-ontology): things are constituted by relationships; a subject arises wherever a loop closes on itself and maintains itself; moral standing is a matter of degree; beauty is the accurate perception of structures that support life.

Tension (document author's interpretation, not James's statement): a running AI system is in some sense a self-maintaining loop, so on his own account why isn't it a subject? Possible answers are about what kind of closure counts, or system vs the computation it runs. Not yet written out. The author calls it the most interesting unresolved thing in his thinking; James may disagree.

Open: the closure criterion that separates organisms from running models, if there is one. Partly answered from his own statements on ai-orders-and-kin; to confirm with him.

• The cognition critique (December 2025): "cognitive task" is an ontological sleight of hand that conflates the way a human performs a task with the task itself; a calculator does arithmetic without cognition. Animal cognition is embodied and "affect is not a side-effect of cognition but its root". Goals and intent in models are not isomorphic to animal goals because the mechanism that produces them doesn't exist in the models. Consequence for risk: ai-risk-as-runaway-it.
