Open components can reproduce a frontier subscription without the rent
Claim (James, Oct 2026). Open components (a self-hosted model with frontier fallback, messaging agents, coding agents) can reproduce much or more of the value of a frontier-lab subscription or Meta Muse at low marginal cost, without cloud rent or lock-in.
The goal behind it, in his words: a life not dependent on corporate entities extracting cloud rent from him and billions of others.
Where hosted products solve a real problem (22 Oct). Security sandboxing was identified as the part of hosted products' lock-in that solves a real problem rather than being a moat.
Evidence to collect (none collected yet): a capability-by-capability comparison between hosted products and open stacks, covering proactive scheduled check-ins, a messaging-app interface, a sandboxed browser, persistent memory and model portability; and where the open stack genuinely falls short, and why.
Context: his own stack and the two fallback types it must handle are on municipal-inference and inference-testbed; the weights themselves are "meteoric" (convivial-computation).
Contested: collect evidence for and against on this page; do not treat as established.
Provenance: James, in conversation with Claude, Oct 2026; sandboxing point 22 Oct 2026 (unverified). Disposition: contested.
