How the tide turns
Bottom-up, in three phases: (1) hobbyists doing it for themselves; (2) the "why am I paying to be abused through my data" message arrives alongside genuinely attractive alternatives (Immich for the camera roll, Nextcloud and Collabora for documents); (3) cultural discourse makes those alternatives the new mainstream. Success is not people self-hosting (they already do) but a change in the tide of the cloud-convenience narrative, and the alternatives gaining the last yards of maturity needed to be deployed widely and stay well managed long-term. Signal he watches: thousands of increasingly mainstream videos making people ask why they pay for services used against them.
