Claude S. Fischer, America Calling: A Social History of the Telephone to 1940 (UC Press, 1992)

Disposition: stated. Read in full in the browser on 2026-10-11 (chapter 4, "The Telephone Spreads", rural section).

What: a sociologist's social history of the telephone in the US, with a statistical analysis of the rise and fall of farm telephony (1902-1940). Why: the primary account of a community-built network that was adopted en masse and then abandoned, and of why (credit, upgrade standards, end of competition, subsidised rivals). It also rejects "impact" framings of technology in favour of user agency, which bears on philosophy-of-technology.
